Chapter 17

I went to Craig’s apartment Tuesday after work. I was ready to tell him the news I’d promised. Hell, I was even ready to tell him that I was pregnant. With my timing and nonrefundable ticket, there was no way he could say anything to keep me around.

He’d cooked dinner, so we sat at his kitchen table and talked over sirloin steaks and baked potatoes. Our conversation was going well. He was excited that his team was going to be in a championship game, and he was the first coach in ten years to get them to that level. I was genuinely proud of him because I knew how hard he’d worked for that.

“You gon’ come see us, right?” Craig asked.

“When is the game?”

“On the 17th.”

I took a deep breath before I spoke. “Okay Craig, I’m not gon’ beat around the bush. I’m leavin’ town on the 18th. I need to get away for a while.” I paused to give him a chance to say something, but he just looked like he was waiting for me to say “Psych” or something. “Once this stuff with Smoke is resolved, I’ll be back.”

I could tell he wasn’t pleased. “So, what am I supposed to say? You lookin’ at me like I actually have some say-so in your plans. It sounds like you already have your mind made up.”

“Craig, can you please kill the attitude? I don’t want any bad blood between us.”

“You can’t expect me to be excited. You’re tellin’ me we’re about to break up now that you’ve decided—without talkin’ to me—that you’re movin’.”

“We’re not really together right now. Remember the open relationship thing? You made that call. But right now, that’s not even the issue. There’s a lot more to my decision. I have to think about my safety and the safety of everybody around me.”

Craig stood up. “I was gonna keep you safe.”

“How?”

“Do you know me and Chauncey sat here the other day and talked about my plans with you? I was lookin’ for a way to stop that nigga from messin’ with you. I was gon’ do whatever I could to make sure our future wouldn’t be ruined. If that meant we had to pick up and leave, then that’s what I would’ve been willin’ to do.”

“When, Craig? ‘Cause in the past few weeks you haven’t acted too concerned. It’s funny how you could sit up and talk to your brother about our relationship, but you couldn’t fill me in until now. You act like you wanna keep your distance from me, so my move should be right up your alley.”

“Well, it’s not. And like I said, I might as well plan on bein’ by myself now. I don’t see a future for us no more, even if you do come back.”

“How can you say that?” I asked.

“When you make a decision as big as this without tellin’ the person you supposedly love so much, there’s a problem. Who’s to say you won’t do the same shit
